Garden(s) of Refuge Planting Action

From November 20 to 22, 2025, the Garden(s) of Refuge initiative organized a three-day community planting action behind the Internationales Begegnungszentrum on Emil-Figge-Straße in Dortmund. The event brought together a wide range of participants, including students, families, neighbors, colleagues, and nature enthusiasts, all of whom contributed their time and energy to the project.

Over the course of the three days, volunteers planted around 1,000 trees and shrubs, helping to further shape the Garden(s) of Refuge as a shared green space. The planting action focused on strengthening urban biodiversity while creating a place that encourages encounter, reflection, and a sense of belonging. Working side by side, participants experienced how collective effort can lead to visible and lasting impact.

Despite the late autumn weather, engagement remained high throughout the event. The strong turnout and sustained commitment highlighted the importance of community-based environmental initiatives and the willingness of people to actively contribute to sustainable projects in their local context.

The Garden(s) of Refuge planting action demonstrated how environmental responsibility and social cohesion can go hand in hand. By combining practical environmental work with opportunities for exchange and cooperation, the event reflected values of sustainability, inclusion, and civic engagement that align closely with UA Ruhr’s broader mission.
