How Biased Are We? A Conversation about Perception, Cognition, and Accuracy
March 05, 2020 | 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm | Deutsches Haus at NYU | 42 Washington Mews | New York, NY 10003Perceptions are the window to our world. Rather than merely producing a snapshot, our brains actively create our experiences when we perceive a scene, an object or a person. Given that background knowledge and biases always shape the ways in which we understand the world, how can we ever truly perceive persons and objects or do we simply see the world as we want it to be? A panel of psychologists and philosophers will present recent research in a conversation about our capacity to adequately understand the world around us.
Speakers: Albert Newen (Ruhr University Bochum), Lee Jussim (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey), Emily Balcetis (New York University)
Moderator: Albert Newen
Organizers: Deutsches Haus at NYU, University Alliance Ruhr, DAAD, and DFG
